GASTONIA, N.C. -- A mother and her daughter on the way to the hospital died in a car-train crash around 1 p.m. Thursday, authorities said.
The wreck happened at the intersection of Ozark Avenue and Cox Road. Gastonia Police Sgt. Jeff Clark said the car was split into several pieces.
Police said the victims were Mary Davis Castro, 57, of Gastonia and her daughter, Shirley Davis Clark, 41, of York. Clark was riding with her mother, who had a doctor's appointment, police said.
Based on a preliminary investigation, police said the crossing arms were down and that one Norfolk Southern train had slowed down for another to pass. The slower train may have appeared to have stopped, police said.
