Police find portable meth lab

What police say was a methamphetamine lab concealed in the trunk of a car has two Rock Hill men facing charges.

Joshua Phillip Pitchford, 32, and Jeffery Ronald Evans, 35, both face multiple drug charges after police say they found meth-making materials in the trunk of Pitchford's car while the two men made a stop at a local drug store.

Pitchford was wanted by probation and parole agents, according to police. Last week, police searched Pitchford's mobile home and seized marijuana and some pills, said Lt. B.J. Kennedy of the York County Multijurisdictional Drug Enforcement Unit. Authorities were tipped that Pitchford would be at Walgreens at 1008 Oakland Ave. on Wednesday, Kennedy said.

Just before midnight, police found Evans in Pitchford's 1998 two-door green Honda Accord, according to a York County Sheriff's Office report.

"You could smell a strong chemical odor in the car," Kennedy said. "In the trunk, we found a small meth lab. Had we not arrested them, they would have had the lab up and running in no time."

Police arrested Pitchford with two boxes of Sudafed that he had just purchased from the drug store, Kennedy said. Authorities seized $2,300 worth of drugs, including 17 boxes of Sudafed and eight doses of Xanax, the report notes.

"They had the entire lab, power sources and lights," Kennedy said. "Our assumption is that they were going to go out in the county in a wooded area and cook the meth."

Authorities charged Pitchford with trafficking methamphetamine, fourth offense; trafficking pseudoephedrine, fourth offense; distribution of methamphetamine, fourth offense; distribution of methamphetamine within the proximity of a school, and resisting arrest, according to the sheriff's office report.

Evans was charged with trafficking methamphetamine, second offense; trafficking pseudoephedrine, second offense; and possession of Xanax, second offense, the report states.

Bond was set at $52,500 for Evans. No bond had been set for Pitchford. Both men remained in custody Thursday night at York County Detention Center.
