Planning to do some last-minute shopping this week? Carolyn Amer, 53, has managed the J.C. Penney store at Rock Hill Galleria for 17 years. She talked with The Herald about this year's holiday shopping season and offered some advice for procrastinators.

How does this year's shopping season compare with last year?

Traffic is down from last year. It's noticeably less. Inventories are a little bit lower than they have been in the past. We do not have as much merchandise as in the past. We have as much variety, just not as much merchandise.

What advice do you have for last-minute shoppers?

This year, the longer you wait, the better you're going to be as far as price goes. Don't think it's too late.

What are the best times to go shopping?

Early morning, 7 to 8 a.m. That's really the best time, because most people don't shop that early. There's just fewer customers up at that time.

What items are most popular this year?

This year has been a big year for basics -- underwear, socks, coats, jeans. Those are always big. But this year, I've seen an increase.
