York County deputies win awards at national horse riding competition

The York County Sheriff’s Office announced on Wednesday that two deputies from its Mounted Patrol won awards at a nationwide competition.

Deputies Mark McCarter and Jamie Sandifer traveled to Wilmington, Delaware to compete in the North American Police Equestrian Competition (NAPEC) from Sept. 25 to 29, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office. The two won 12 awards over the weekend.

Deputy McCarter and his horse Cochise won first place in the Western division as well as the Novice and Obstacle combined event, the press release states. They finished third in the Novice Equitation and obstacle course event, the release states states.

Deputy Sandifer and his horse Barney placed sixth in the Western competition and 12th in the Obstacle competition, the press release states.

The deputies also placed third in a combined team event with a member of the National Park Service.

The deputies competed against 14 law enforcement agencies and over 70 horses across the United States and Canada.
