Chester man dies in hospital following wreck on S.C. 72

A Chester man who was injured last week in a car accident on S.C. 72/Saluda Road has died as a result of his injuries.

Authorities say the crash happened last Tuesday around 10:15 a.m. Leon Tobias, 40, was taken to a hospital in Charlotte, where he succumbed to his injuries six days later, said Chester County Coroner Terry Tinker on Wednesday.

Tobias was making a left-hand turn from Cedar Grove Church Road onto S.C. 72 at the time of the collision, said S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Gary Miller. Another driver – who was not injured during the wreck – was traveling south on S.C. 72 and hit the back of Tobias’ car.

A sign is posted in the area instructing drivers not to make a left-hand turn onto the highway from Cedar Grove Church Road, Miller said. Tobias was not wearing a seatbelt when his car was struck, according to the Highway Patrol.

Troopers say both drivers ran off the road after colliding. Tobias’ car traveled down an embankment and hit a tree, Miller said.
