A popular beer and liquor establishment just over the South Carolina line said it would have to close down on Sundays after hearing from the state tax office.

Southern Spirits, which is on U.S. 521 just south of Ballantyne, announced to customers over the weekend that it would no longer open its beer and wine section on Sundays.

The company had sold beer and wine on Sundays after a 2012 referendum in Lancaster County allowed establishments that served alcohol on their premises to sell on Sundays. Liquor sales have always been prohibited on Sunday under the state’s “blue laws.”

A letter from the S.C. Department of Revenue said there had been “some confusion” on whether that allowed those businesses to sell beer and wine to-go on Sundays. The tax department clarified that it is only OK to serve beer and wine to drink on-site, such as at a restaurant.

Bonnie Swingle of the Department of Revenue said “a few businesses” were affected.

Southern Spirits said the change would cause a loss of jobs and tax revenue to the county.
