Fort Mill school crossing guard injured in hit-and-run case, police say

Police have detained a man after they say a driver hit a school crossing guard Friday afternoon and fled the scene.

Police have a 19-year-old suspect from Charlotte in custody, but have not charged the man, according to a statement by Maj. Bryan Zachary of the Fort Mill Police Department. Charges are pending, Zachary said.

Police said shortly before 3 p.m., a driver hit school crossing guard Gary Tate, 58, of Charlotte, near the entrance of Fort Mill Middle School near Springfield Parkway, and left the scene.

Tate was transferred by ambulance to Carolinas Medical Center-Pineville, Zachary said, and the suspect was located.

Tate’s condition is unknown.
