Local Republicans will have a chance to spend their morning and evening next Wednesday with a pair of presidential hopefuls.
U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky will speak at the American Legion Hall with an unidentified “special guest” at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23. Later that day, Carly Fiorina – a rising star of the campaign after her GOP debate performance last month – will hold a town hall at 6 p.m. at the Magnolia Room at Laurel Creek.
Paul, who has held two other events in Rock Hill in the past four months, is returning for “Stand With Rand,” an event at 199 S. Cherry Road, according to the campaign’s Eventbrite page. The event is free, but members of the public are encouraged to RSVP through Eventbrite.
Voters can then spend their evening with Fiorina, a former CEO of Hewlett-Packard and 2010 Republican candidate for one of California’s seats in the U.S. Senate. Fiorina had a break-out performance in last month’s televised Republican debate. She was credited with winning the secondary debate of seven candidates who had polled too low to qualify for the main debate hosted by Fox News.
Since then, Fiorina’s campaign has gained more attention, and she became the only candidate to graduate to the top-tier candidates’ debate Wednesday on CNN.
Fiorina and Paul are the latest in a string of Republican presidential contenders to come through the area. York County GOP Chairman Wes Climer said Rock Hill is a popular stop because York County will be crucial in South Carolina’s February primary.
“York County is going to be the sixth or seventh most voter-rich county in the primary,” Climer said. “For anybody to be competitive here, you need to reach a coalition of fiscal conservatives, social conservatives (and) national security conservatives. The more they get to know South Carolina, they know if they can win York County, (then) they can win the state.”
Tickets for Fiorina’s event are free, but anyone planning to attend is asked to visit the campaign’s Eventbrite page to RSVP. The Magnolia Room is located at 4017 Laurel Creek Drive.
