Traffic alert: 2 lanes of I-77 SB at Catawba River closed for bridge repair
Two of four southbound lanes of Interstate 77 will be closed through the afternoon rush hour Tuesday as workers repair yet another hole in the bridge over the Catawba River.
The state Department of Transportation is recommending commuters take an alternate route, if possible. Two outside southbound lanes are closed near mile marker 82, leaving two lanes open.
The hole – about two feet by four feet – is the result of aging infrastructure, DOT said.
“Due to the usual heavy rush hour traffic expected this afternoon,” DOT said in a statement, “motorists are advised to consider alternate routes. SCDOT urges caution in all work zones.”
DOT will reopen the lanes “as soon as possible,” but no timetable was given.
