In their first year of having a Lego League Robotics Team at Kinard Elementary School in Clover, the Kinard Eagles will compete in the S.C. First Lego League Tournament in Charleston in March. The team qualified for the state tournament by placing third at the S.C. First Lego League Regional at Oakridge Middle School on Dec. 11. The team also won first place in Robot Performance.First Lego League is an international program that has students design, build and program robots that perform missions on a table. Students use Lego Mindstorm kits and compete research, technical design and teamwork. This year’s theme for Lego League is “Body Forward.” Students had to study biomedical engineering and pick a topic. The team at Kinard is presenting on the artificial thumb and has come up with their own design for one that is more affordable than current options on the market.Members of the team are Mike Childres, Darion Jackson, Christian Pearson, Harrison Pratt, Zach Sommers, Sierra Stiles, Roman Thiessen, Logan Varalli and Charlotte Gourley. Todd Goff, Amanda Wagner and Jeremy Eller lead the program at Kinard.
