More than 800 students at Oakridge Middle School walked Friday across Oakridge Road to honor local firefighters, police and medics at nearby Bethel Volunteer Fire Department station.
Students learned all week about the events of Sept. 11, 2001, and they presented a link chain – a link for every first responder killed on the date 10 years ago – with messages of appreciation to the fire department personnel.
They also brought banners with written messages of lessons learned.
Tom O’Neil, a retired firefighter from New York who now lives in the school district, addressed the students.
