A York County Detention Center inmate was injured Monday after officials say he jumped from an upper tier stair rail, fell about 12 feet and struck his head on a concrete floor.
At about 4:19 p.m. Monday, inmate Steven Spagnoli was out of his cell within his housing area for his allotted recreation period, according to a York County Sheriff’s Office news release.
Spagnoli was the only inmate out of his cell in his housing area, officials say.
Medical staff responded until emergency medical services arrived to take Spagnoli to a medical flight, which took him to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Spagnoli was listed in critical condition Monday night, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Spagnoli was scheduled to be transferred to the S.C. Department of Corrections on Tuesday after his April 26 conviction on murder, attempted murder and other charges. He was sentenced last week to life without parole for the Sept. 28, 2010, murder of Richard Leach.
The Sheriff’s Office said an investigation into Monday’s incident is being conducted.
