York’s venerated coach Bobby Carroll sent a strong message to their upcoming playoff opponent, South Pointe, on Friday night: Cougars football is ready to contend for a state title.
Unfortunately for the Cougars’ first round opponent, the Laurens Raiders, that message was stamped all over them as York quarterback Spencer Carroll picked out four different receivers for touchdowns after running back Ryan Moore ran in for three early scores in the first half of a 56-0 win on Friday.
“We clicked on all cylinders tonight,” Bobby Carroll said. “I’m real proud of our defense; it’s designed to stop the passing game and for it to be so effective against this running game was great.”
Instead, York’s running game was the talk of the first half. Senior back Ryan Moore burst down the left hand side of the field for 54 yards to score after only five minutes of play, before completing a much easier run from three yards out just before the first quarter ended. Moore then completed the trifecta two minutes later, putting the Cougars up 21-0 early.

Laurens’ offense, led by junior quarterback Quinn Suber, struggled to string a drive together until late in the fourth quarter. The Raiders’ offense didn’t receive much help from York’s secondary, which picked off the upperclassman three times over the stretch of the night.
“I’ve got to tip my hat to (defensive coordinator) David Prince, who had a great plan throughout the game,” Bobby Carroll said.
With the hard work finished, Carroll had more than enough time in the pocket to float in easy scores to Tay Neely (from 10 yards), Josh McCoy (46 yards), Markel Castle (27 yards) and Daurice Simpson (4 yards).
“Spencer was really able to spread it around tonight,” Bobby Carroll, his father, said after the game. “You’ve got to be happy with that and now we got to focus on be motivated and moving on from this win to take on the rest of the playoffs.”
With the victory, York now faces familiar rival South Pointe in the quarterfinals. The Cougars shocked the previously unbeaten Stallions earlier this season by handing them their first loss, 31-17, at District III Stadium in October.
