The Clover Post 38 Lightning American Legion baseball team has shown steady progress eight games into the season.
The team has compiled a 4-4 record, embracing a challenging schedule that includes elite North Carolina Legion programs.
First-year head coach Hank Wofford said Post 38 has seen some great programs so far in North Carolina, including Cherryville Post 100, Gastonia Post 23 and Lincoln County Post 4.
“It has been an opportunity for our players to see some very talented players, especially pitchers,” Wofford said.

“We have held our own playing some great games and even knocking off Cherryville Post 100, 12-6, two weeks ago,” he said. “Unlike many legion programs who pull from different high schools, here at Clover we just pull from Clover High School.”
Wofford recently was named head coach of the Clover High School baseball team. “This gives us a chance to play together in the summer, which is great,” he said.
Timely hitting and solid pitching performances have contributed to the Clover Legion team’s success, and Chase Goldberg and Zack Dow have been tough outs so far.
Goldberg is hitting a sizzling .571 with 12 hits in 21 at-bats through eight games, while Dow is hitting .500 with five hits in 10 at-bats for the season.
Other Post 38 hitters batting .300 or above include Corey Paraham, .353; Cody Payne, .348; Hunter Hurst, .333; Davis McCarter, .333; Landon Harkey, .313; Justin Rayano, .300; and Jonathan Brakefield, .300.
Barrett Courtwright has been a dominant pitcher, with 20 strikeouts, three walks and a 3.10 ERA through 22-plus innings.
Jesse Bowers has a team-low 0.80 ERA with three strikeouts and three walks in 10 innings of work, while teammate Hunter Hurst has a 1.48 ERA with five strikeouts and three walks in 10-plus innings.
Post 38 will play at Rock Hill Post 34 on June 19, with a doubleheader beginning 6 p.m. The next home games will be June 21 against Fort Mill, at noon and 2 p.m.
All home games are at the Clover High School baseball field.
