Sports briefs, Oct. 9: YCHS plans basketball skills camp

Skill camps hosted by YCHS boys’ basketball

Two youth skill camps are being hosted by York Comprehensive High School boys’ basketball coaches and players.

The first camp is slated for 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at YCHS. The next session will be at the same times on Nov. 8.

The camp is for third- to sixth-grade boys and girls. The cost is $15 per session, or $25 for both sessions. Those campers that register for both sessions will receive a T-shirt. Registration forms are available at the athletic office at YCHS or at elementary school offices.

YMS eighth-grade football pounds Castle Heights

The York Middle School eighth-grade Cougar football team defeated Castle Heights 32-6 last week.

The Cougars opened the scoring on the second play of the game with a 59-yard pass from Hunter Parks to Ethan Causey, who caught a screen pass from quarterback Ryan Kelly and ran 34 yards for a touchdown. Kelly passed to Ethan Mitchell for the two-point play.

Kelly scored again on a 2-yard run to push the lead to 20-7. In the fourth quarter, defensive tackle Cameron Love caused a fumble and scooped it up for a 15-yard touchdown fumble return.

Defensive standouts were Joseph Loggins, Mickey Loggins, Dazeaevien Wright, Tyler Ellis, Josh Austin, Cameron Steele, Justin Grant, Stephen Oglesby, Hasonn Rushing, Max Necklen, Joseph Milton, Cameron Love, Jerry Burgess and Ryan Kelly.

The Cougars, 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference, travel to South Pointe Wednesday for a 5 p.m. game against Saluda Trail.

Student of the Week captains, recommended by the teachers and selected by the coaches, were Jacob Lingerfeldt and Samari Kennedy.

Clover High School runners on the rise

The Clover High School cross-country team took on Fort Mill, Lake Pointe, Nation Ford and Buford on Oct. 1 at New Centre Park.

It was a hot day on the course, but many of the Clover runners were still able to run their fastest times despite the heat.

Jessie DeFalco came in first place overall, beating 72 runners with her best time of 20 minutes, 46 seconds. Cassie Caldwell, Jewel McBee, Jude Currence and Emily Horton all ran their season best.

The boys’ cross-country team had a strong showing with Will White in fifth place; Cameron Marvin, eighth; and Leland Capps, Colton Ennis, Chamond Brewington, Luke Barz, Brody Green, Jarome Baggett and Taylor Cleveland all surpassing their season records.

CHS will be home again Oct. 15 for senior night at New Centre Park.

Lady Cougar basketball tryout dates announced

York Comprehensive High School varsity and junior varsity basketball tryouts will be Nov. 3 to 5.

The Nov. 3 and Nov. 5 tryouts will be from 3:45 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Nov. 4 tryouts will be from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

All practices will be held at the YCHS main and auxiliary gyms. Participants must have parents’ permission and an athletic physical on file with the school’s athletic department.
