York, Clover girls’ golfers qualify for state

Clover’s Alyssa Campbell and York’s Sarah Smith both qualified as individuals for the Class 4A state tournament.

The two competed Oct. 20 in the Upper State girls’ golf tournament at the Village Greens Golf Club in Spartanburg.

Eight teams advanced to the state tournament. The York Comprehensive High School team competed but failed to make the cut.

The state tournament will be Oct. 26-28 at the Wescott Plantation in Summerville.

York youth basketball registration open

The York Parks and Recreation Department is holding early registration for youth basketball for boys and girls age 5-14.

Early registration ends Oct. 31, with a fee of $25 per participant. Regular registration will be Nov. 3-Dec. 8 with a fee of $30 per participant.

Late registration will be Dec. 9-10 with a late registration fee of $40. Registration is at the York Recreation Center on White Rose Lane from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday.

Youth basketball is divided into various age groups: Biddy Basketball is for ages 5-7 with parent participation required, and Zappers is for ages 8-10; both play Saturday mornings at the York Recreation Center.

Hot Shots is for ages 11-14 and plays Monday evenings at the York Recreation Center. The Junior Cougar basketball program is for girls age 8-14, conducted by the York Comprehensive High School Lady Cougars Basketball players and coaches Saturday mornings at the York Recreation Complex.

The regular registration deadline for Junior Cougars is Jan. 6 and is $30 per participant. Late registration is Jan. 7-8 and is $40.

A birth certificate is required at registration for all new participants. Volunteers are needed to coach.

Skill development camp Nov. 8

A skill development camp hosted by the York Comprehensive High School boys’ basketball coaches and players will be 9-11:30 a.m. Nov. 8 at the YCHS main gym.

The camp is for third- to sixth-grade boys and girls, and the cost is $15. Registration forms are available at the athletic office at YCHS or at the elementary schools offices.

Lady Cougar basketball tryouts Nov. 3-5

York Comprehensive High School varsity and junior-varsity basketball tryouts will be Nov. 3-5.

The Nov. 3 and Nov. 5 tryouts will be 3:45-6 p.m.; the Nov. 4 tryouts, on Election Day, will be from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

Girls in grades nine-12 are eligible. All practices will be at the YCHS main and auxiliary gyms. Participants must have parents’ current permission and athletic physical on file.

York Middle loses to Sullivan

The York Middle School Cougars football team lost a close game with Sullivan, 28-24.

The Cougars are 3-3 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

Student of the Week captains were Keaton Chambers and Hasonn Rushing.

Cougar Players of the Week named

The York Comprehensive High School Players of the Week have been named for the Nation Ford game Oct. 17.

Offensive Player of the Week: Brandon Garvin, 15 carries, 107 yards, two touchdowns, 7.1 yards per carry; Offensive Line Player of the Week, Travis White, graded 88 percent, seven knockdowns; Specialist, Buddy Anderson, five of six PATs, 32-yard field goal, six touchbacks on kickoffs.

Defensive Player of the Week: Nick Sturgill, 15 total tackles, five solo, four primary, six assists, two quarterback pressures, two third-down stops, one big hit, one pass broken up, one tackle for loss; Defensive Line Player of the Week: Devionne Chalk, 11 tackles, two solo, three primary, six assists, eight quarterback pressures, one third-down stop, one fourth-down stop, one big hit, one sack, one tackle for loss.
