YCHS wrestling defeat rival Clover

The York Comprehensive High School wrestlers defeated Clover 48-30 last week.

“It was an intense match,” Cougar head wrestling coach Todd Hershberger said of the Jan 22 meet. “Clover definitely brought its game. We were a little sluggish. Thankfully, we had some guys that pulled it out toward the end.”

The win was on York’s Senior Night.

“We’re glad to get one tonight,” he said. “It means a lot for our seniors to have the support here. We graduated five guys tonight and appreciate what they’ve done for our program.”

Cougar Cole Rumfelt, back after an injury, defeated his opponent in triple overtime in the 138-pound weight class.

“I didn’t want to give up,” Rumfelt said. “I would hate to lose on Senior Night.”

Rumfelt described his key to success on the mat: “You stay with it. A lot of it is technique.”

York senior Thomas Wilkerson pinned his opponent in the 195-pound division.

“It was my last match here at the high school,” he said. “I just went back to the basics, looking for an opening at the right time. Hearing the crowd felt great.”

Jake Beverly pinned his opponent in the 106-pound division.

“The fans and cheerleaders provided a lot of motivation,” Beverly said. “You’ve got to stay with it on the mat. You’ve got to figure it out.”

York’s Anthony Adams survived an 8-7 win in the 152-pound weight classification.

“Stamina made the difference,” said Adams. “It’s been a while since I was in a match that close. It felt good winning a close match. The guy was strong.”

Clover head coach Michael Fitzgerald knows about the Clover-York rivalry.

“It doesn’t matter what sport it is, York and Clover always battle it out,” he said. It’s going to be a dogfight no matter what happens.”

Fitzgerald is looking for the end result when the Blue Eagles compete. “We can’t finish anything right now,” he said. “We’re not finishing as a team, York’s a good team. They’ve got great wrestlers.”

Concluded Fitzgerald, “We had our chances, but didn’t pull it off.”

Clover senior wrestler Kenneth Brown pinned his opponent in the 145-pound weight class. “I looked for the opportunity and reversed my opponent,” Brown said.

Clover’s Andrew Dorrill pinned his opponent in the 132-pound division.

“Getting off to a good start was important,” he said. “Technique has a lot to do with success on the mat. The win felt good and got the team off to a good start.”

Blue Eagle Zach Conrad also pinned his opponent.

Conrad said he is searching for the ultimate goal. “I want to win a state championship is my weight class,” he said.

The York and Clover wrestling teams will be competing in the Region III-AAAA Tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday at Rock Hill High School.
