Roaring with laughter
I read your recent article about the trees growing up through the sidewalks in downtown York. What a funny article!
Let's see, (according to the article), the city government needs to talk to "Tree Experts," the "Forest Commission," the newly formed city of York "Tree Commission," and the "Historical Commission" to see if someone can solve this problem. Here is an idea. Cut them down! Trees don't belong on the sidewalks. Have you ever watched someone in a wheelchair or pushing a stroller try to make it down our sidewalks? Would you approve a plan in a new sub division that has trees in the middle of the sidewalk without room for two people to pass?
It's time for the city government to "govern." We elected you to make decisions, not hire consultants and form commissions for every little thing that needs to be done.
By the way, if you use my idea, you can simply give me free water for a year, (much cheaper than your way of fixing things).
This letter is long over-due, as it is not the first time that Mrs. Lynn Collins, Buck and Chuck Collins have cleaned up the totally neglected property on Ross Cannon Street and Cannon Court in York.
Husband and brother Joe Collens is the self-appointed supervisor.
The city has cleaned it once since I moved here eight years ago. Other than that, it has been totally neglected and overgrown, making it almost impossible to walk through that area, which is necessary to get out of the immediate neighborhood.
The people, as well as daughter in law Peggy Moore, have spent their own time, energy and effort to make this so much nicer for the neighborhood.
I looked out one morning last summer and saw Lynn and Peggy pulling weeds from my flower beds and they got the beds in impeccable shape. It was quite a surprise and a blessing.
Both families keep their lawns and flowers in such nice shape. That also adds so much to the neighborhood.
I would like to personally thank them for all they do for this property. We need more people like this in the neighborhood.
Thank you so much!
Give Obama a chance
For the past several months I've read the opinion pages of the Enquirer-Herald with great interest. I have learned from several reliable sources that the American Democratic Party has been responsible for every calamity that has befallen this country since time began.
Seriously, it is amazing to me that so many people can find fault with our new President-elect Barack Obama before he even takes the oath of office on Jan. 20, 2009. The reason the conservatives lost the elections is not because Obama is black. They lost the election because this country is in serious trouble.
The Republican Party took control of both houses of Congress in 1994 and held control until 2006. George Bush and Dick Cheney worked hard to have Congress remove restrictions and regulations in industry and finance that leads us to this time in history.
Sept. 11, 2001 did not happen because Bill Clinton didn't kill Bin Laden. It happened because the administration chose to ignore an intelligence briefing on Aug. 6, 2001 that Al-Qaeda was planning to hijack planes and run them into buildings to kill as many as possible. Bush-Cheney had eight years to help get us to this point, so the least we can do is give Obama a chance to lead us out of this. It's only fair.
At this time of year many groups need help! Not for overhead but for the influx of unwanted animals and care required.
There is also always the need for upgrading to meet these needs. There are many groups out there and the best thing any donar can do is research and pick the group that is closest to your heart based on preformance.
Some groups to look at are Animal Adoption League, Dogs Desearve Better, The Committe for Responsible Pet Ownership, groups offering discounted spay/neuter etc. The Committe for Responsible Pet Ownership is handing out hay, dog house and building fences.
Most of these groups can be found listed on petfinder.com. If you need information call 803-684-6865.
Also, we will be starting a toys for tots box and invite you participate.
