YORK -- York Comprehensive High School senior Ryan Montgomery defeated the No. 1 wrestler in the state in the 160-pound weight class in last week's Region 3-AAAA Tournament at Fort Mill High School.
Teammate Tay Cannon also won a region championship, competing in the 135-pound weight class.
The Cougars had eight upstate qualifiers altogether, including second-place finishers Lee Wells, competing in the 152 weight class and Joe Kimball in the 189 weight class.
Lealon Comer (103), Jesse Green (112) and Dre Belton (130) were third-place finishers in the region tournament.
Corey Troutman qualified for the upstate by placing fourth in the heavyweight class.
"Our success in the region is good for the program," commented head coach David Spencer. "We have a good many young wrestlers and are building for the future."
Upstate competition will be held Feb. 20 and 21 at Hillcrest High School in Simpsonville.
Spencer said the YCHS grapplers have the opportunity to advance to the state.
"It's been a long time since we've had a wrestler qualify for the state," he said.
