Authorities identify victim in motorcycle fatal

YORK -- Authorities have identified a 46-year-old York man who died in a motorcycle crash near York early Sunday morning.

The man, identified as James D. Smith, lived on Seattle Slew Road, York County Coroner Sabrina Gast said.

Smith was riding south on Adkins Road, about five miles east of York, when his motorcycle went off the left side of the road and overturned, the S.C. Highway Patrol said. The crash occurred around 1 a.m.

The man was riding a Harley-Davidson and was not wearing a helmet, Lance Cpl. Bryan McDougald said. A female passenger survived the crash and was taken to Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, officials said. Her name and condition were not available.

Authorities don't know why the motorcycle ran off the road.

Speed is not believed to be a factor, McDougald said. The speed limit in that area is 45 mph.
