Jeff "J.L." Byrum

HICKORY GROVE -- Jeff Lavonne "U.T." Byrum, 48, of 3680 Beaver Dam Road died Saturday, May 30, 2009, at his home.

A graveside service was held June 3 at Hickory Grove Church of God Cemetery, with the Rev. Mike Goodwin officiating.

Bratton Funeral Home in York served the Byrum family.

H. James Lever

MCCONNELLS -- LTC (Ret.) H. James Lever, 77, of McConnells, ascended into Glory on June 1, 2009, at Piedmont Medical Center, Rock Hill.

He was born on Dec. 20, 1931, to Marion Davis and Ruth Ashe Lever. He graduated from York High School in 1949 and Presbyterian College, Clinton, in 1955. Upon graduation he entered the U.S. Army with direct commission from ROTC as a 2nd Lieutenant. Upon completion of his initial tour of duty, he joined the Army Reserves. His unit was called up for service on two different occasions. He then returned permanently to active duty as a combat engineer and retired as a Lt. Colonel after 30 years of service, including three tours of duty in Vietnam. His Meritorious awards include: Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one Silver Service Star and three Bronze Service Stars, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Meritorious Unit Commendation Armed Forces Reserve Medal. After completing his active duty he taught ROTC at Chester High School for fifteen years.

Colonel Lever's interests were many and varied, he was an active member of Olivet Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder for many years; a member of Lowry's Highland Ruritan Club; he loved farming, hunting, and raising his dogs. Every year during the Christmas season he loved playing Santa Claus at the McConnells fire department.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Sally Lever. Also by his children, H. James Lever Jr., and his wife Colonel Theresa Lever of Fort Knox, Ky., Kimberly Wright of Bay City, Mich., Michael Lever of Ypsilanti, Mich., and their mother Betty L. Goings of Mich.; stepsons, Tom Kaine, of Liberty, Mike Kaine of Alpharetta, Ga., and Kevin Kaine of Rock Hill; stepdaughter, Karen Daine and her husband, Dr. Mike Daine of Fort Collins, Colo.; grandchildren, Katie and TJ Lever, Nathan Daine, Ryan and Jason Kaine, Chris and Kyle Davis, and Hunter Kaine. Other survivors include his sisters, Ina Lever Frame of McConnells, Ruth Lever Sample and her husband, Dr. James Sample of Charlotte, N.C., brother, M. Davis Lever and his wife, Dr. Bess Lawton of Summerville, and many loved nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life was held at Olivet Presbyterian Church, 2 p.m., Thursday, June 4, 2009, with the Rev. Chip McArthur and Dr. James Sample officiating; internment, with military honors, following at Olivet Cemetery.

Loretta Talley

CLOVER -- Loretta Ann Wiggins Talley, 69 of Wiggins Road, died Monday, June 1, 2009, at Piedmont Medical Center, Rock Hill.

Family and friends were invited to a celebration of life Saturday, June 6, at her home.

Loretta Talley was born Feb. 28, 1940, to the late Clyde H. and Gay Pauline Hester Wiggins. She is preceded in death by a son, Michael Lee Talley and two sisters, Patricia Huffstetler and Teresa Simons.

Survivors are her daughter, Wanda Cody of Pickens,; son, John Talley of Clover; sisters, Myra Wiggins and Linda Cullins, both of Clover and Sandra Green of Gastonia, N.C.; brother, Frank Wiggins of Gaffney, S.C.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
