LWAA teams take on All Stars tourneys

Lake Wylie Athletic Association Little League sent participants in three age divisions to Little League district All Stars in June.

Each team won at least one game. LWAA’s coach pitch team earned a victory in its first game in Lancaster. The 9- and 10-year-old minors team finished 2 and 2 in Chester. The 11- and 13-year-old intermediate division team finished 1 and 1 in a round-robin format in Fort Mill. The team finished within a single run of advancing to the state tournament.

Minor league team coach Denis Drinkwalter submits:

The first game for the minor league team faced Tega Cay Navy. The first few batters shelled mortar rounds around the outfield to load the bases. The clean-up hitter came up to hit a grand slam bomb over the center field wall. TCN scored a couple more the next inning. Down eight runs, LWAA managed to put four runs on the board in the third. LWAA lost 14-4.

Up next was a 11-5 victory against Newport. Game three was a grudge match against Fort Mill. LWAA started the game with stellar pitching, shutting down Fort Mill and putting a couple of runs on the board. They did it again the second. LWAA was now up 3-0.

Going into the third inning, LWAA made a decision to preserve pitching in case of a win. It proved fatal. Fort Mill scored 11 runs in one inning. In the bottom of the sixth, LWAA sparked to life with a walk, stolen base and couple hits, with a few points. The LWAA crew tied the game forcing extra innings.

In the top of the seventh bases loaded with two outs, a pitch gets by the LWAA catcher. Fort Mill goes for a steal at home. The catcher catches the runner sliding into home to save the inning. At the bottom of seventh, LWAA runners on second and third with one out. A single base hit over the infield scores the run for LWAA to win the game.

In game four, LWAA faced Tega Cay Navy again. LWAA struck first in first inning. TCN came back with 2 runs in the second. LWAA had their best hitting, best pitched and best fielding game yet. LWAA had a great game on defense, even a double play. Still LWAA lost their second time to TCN and was eliminated in the tournament.
