When a rain and wind storm forced Baxter Village Community Association to cancel its 13th annual Fall Festival in November, members wanted to replace it with an event that was equally entertaining.
“As natives of the Midwest, similar to thousands of others who moved here, our family has always enjoyed the traditional snow day and sledding,” said Mike Martoccia, Baxter Village activities director.
“Since we don’t get too many of those here in the Carolinas, the next best scenario was to create one.”
The first Baxter Village Winter Fest will be held noon-5 p.m. Dec. 13.
Through a partnership with Zippy Ice of Charlotte, 15 pallets of ice and snow making equipment will create a base of 3 to 4 inches of snow for sledding in Springmaid Park. The sledding hill, which is set to be 100 feet long by 20 feet wide, will be adjacent to Market Street.
In addition to sledding, visitors will see Santa and his elves, hayrides, inflatables and obstacle course, strolling carolers costumed as Dickens characters, game booths, face painting and s’mores by the fire pits.
Seasonal food and beverages will be available from merchants such as Beef O’Brady’s, Six Pence Pub, grapevine, Fratellis, Akahana, Baxter Social House, McAlister’s Deli, Cupcrazed, TCBY and Fish Market.
The Fort Mill High School Concert Chorus, Holiday Singers of the Carolinas and Next Level Gymnastics Academy will perform.
“This event truly has something for all ages,” Martoccia said. “We expect to see both adults and kids of all ages frolicking in the snow and challenging the hill.”
