Fort Mill soccer still battling rain as its biggest opponent

Rain remains to be the Fort Mill varsity soccer team's biggest opponent this season, as several of its games have been canceled do to inclement weather.

"We have played three games so far between rain storms," said head coach Lloyd Chalker.

Last weekend, the Jackets played in a "mini-tournament." And in spite of the rain and weather, the Jackets beat the first team, Cardinal Newman, 4-1. The Jackets' scorers were Matthew Knowe, Jack Gantzer, Chris Landvik-Larsen and David Walas. The team "played well," Chalker said.

Earlier in the month, the Jackets played Lexington, which is ranked number three in the state. Fort Mill held strong.

Tyler Vukoder scored the Jacket's only goal which led the game until the 68th minute of play. By the end of the game though, the Jackets lost 2-1.

"This was still preseason and we got to play a lot of players in two very high level games," Chalker said. "We believe this will pay off in the long run. Sean Van Etten had an outstanding weekend in the goal for us too."

After another rain-out March 11, the Jackets were finally able to play some games. They did so with a bang.

Fort Mill won the game in York 7-0. Vukoder led the game in goals with a hat trick (three goals). Eric Fielden scored one score and assisted three more. Josh Mercadel, Brad Gano and Marschal Marten also had a goal each.
