The Fort Mill girls track team faced its first loss of the season when it took on Northwestern last week losing by a score of 74-67.
Despite winning 10 events, including all three relays, the Yellow Jackets were unable to bring home a victory.
Junior Ceci Kryst had an outstanding night getting a personal best in the triple jump with a 34'6", a winning time of 12.7 in the 100-meter and over 17 feet in the long jump.
Kryst also anchored the winning 4x100 relay team, which finished with its best time of 51.0 second.
"The school record is 50.6," said head coach Steve Mullinax. "The relay team has been the best surprise of the season."
Senior Ashley Potts won the 100-meter hurdles in 25.2 seconds and the 400-meter hurdles in 1:05.07.
The Yellow Jackets also brought home wins in the 400-meter, 800-meter, hurdles and shot put. But the team missed many opportunities to take home second or third place, which would have secured their win.
"There were seven events that we either didn't win or we missed second place by two-tenths of a second or less," explained Mullinax. "We had every chance in the world to win the meet, but we didn't get enough of the second and third place points we needed to take away from the other team."
In the 400 and 800-meter races, senior Tiayonna Blackmon won both, but fell shot in the mile and two-mile to Northwestern's Mary Kate DuBard. Blackmon won the 400-meters in 59.10 and the 800-meter in 2:20.6.
Mullinax said that more athletes need to step up in their events, rather than the team relying on the same competitors to bring home wins.
The match-up against York scheduled for Thursday, was canceled due to bad weather, and may not be rescheduled due to calendar conflicts. Most of the team will be off for spring break this week, but some will meet to practice and compete in the Taco Bell event this Saturday.
Mullinax said he will not be taking a full crew to compete, but will focus on some of the stronger athletes including senior Ashley Potts, Blackmon sisters and Kryst, among others.
The Jackets return from spring break next week with a home meet against Lancaster Tuesday and will be preparing for regional competition the following week.
The boys lost handily to Northwestern 102-39. Highlights for Fort Mill included senior Josh Strickland winning the shot-put with a throw of 38' 9 inches and the discus with a throw of 120' 8 inches.
Eighth-grader Mark Blackmon won the mile in 4:48 and junior Jacob Scartozzi won the 400-meters in 52.1.
