Semipros play for title Saturday
The Carolina Scorpions, a semi-professional football team based in Rock Hill, is preparing to play for the Super Bowl of the South Eastern American Football League Saturday, Oct. 4, against the South Georgia Warriors.
The team stars three former players who graduated from Fort Mill High School - Chris Jackson, Brandon Silvers and Cameron Wood.
Silvers, who graduated in 2001, leads the team in tackles with 69 and has recorded a team-high 12 tackles for a loss. He has also completed 15-25 passes and scored four touchdowns, one rushing and four passing.
Wood and Jackson both graduated in 2005. Wood is second on the team in sacks with nine and has been in on 61 tackles. Jackson leads the team in blocked field goal attempts with three and has a team-high four safeties.
The Scorpions, who are in their first year, have had an impressive season. They lost their first game by forfeit but won 10 of their past 11 games, including most recently against the Anderson Red Dawgs. The team finished 8-2 on the regular season and is 2-0 in the playoffs after getting a first-round bye.

SMS gets OT win
The Springfield Middle School grade seven football team defeated Sullivan last Wednesday night 14-12 in overtime.
Mike Campbell scored first on a 65-yard touchdown run and later intercepted a Sullivan pass in the end zone. The Mustang's defense played tough, led by Kyle Hedman, Danny Medina, Josh Paulson and Chris Sleezer.
The Mustangs scored in overtime on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Causey to Dalton Rose. Julio Garcia ran up the middle for the two point conversion that gave Springfield the win.
The team is now 1-1 and hosts Fort Mill Middle Wednesday.
GHMS drops one
Gold Hill Middle School lost to Castle Heights Middle 36-14 last week. DeRyan Sanders scored two touchdowns for GHMS and Nigel Bostic played very well on defense.
Tailgate at ILHS
The Indian Land Athletic Booster Club will host a tailgate party from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at Indian Land High School.
The boosters will be serving barbecue sandwich plates; there will be music, inflatables, games and raffles.
Showmars helps IL teams
Showmars in Indian Land has partnered with the Indian Land Athletic Booster Club again this year to offer Booster Club Nights. A portion of their proceeds are used to fund scholarships to student athletes at Indian Land High School. The dates are: Oct. 21, Nov. 25, Jan. 13, Feb. 10, March 10, April 21 and May 12.
