Local residents can begin submitting names for Fort Mill's new Wall of Fame beginning today.
Application packets are available on the town's Web site, www.fortmillsc.org, and at Town Hall at 112 Confederate St. Applications will be accepted Wednesday, Oct. 1, through Wednesday, April 1, 2009. The selected candidates will be announced and honored at a ceremony in September 2009, according to Fort Mill Planning Director Andy Merriman, the town's staff liaison to the Hall of Fame Committee.
"What we've done over the last eight months is establish the bylaws and nominating process," Merriman said. "This gives people six months to put together the nominations."
The nominations require a substantial amount of paperwork to highlight and verify the nominees' contributions to the Town of Fort Mill. Living and deceased town residents, unincorporated township residents, Indian Land residents and residents who lived in the Tega Cay area prior to that city's incorporation in 1982 are eligible for nomination.

"I'm really excited about the Hall of Fame," Mayor Danny Funderburk said. "It was one of my big pushes from my council days."
Shortly after his inauguration earlier this year, Funderburk and the current council set up the Hall of Fame Committee. Fort Mill will start small with the new Hall of Fame, Funderburk said.
"This is a special place and we want to recognize the people along the way that have contributed to making it a special place," he said. "They've gone a long way towards making that happen."
He hopes by this time next year, the Hall of Fame will have inducted its first class.
"There's a lot that goes into it," Funderburk said. "There had to be bylaws written ... you've got to have a lot of documentation, it takes a little while to do it correctly. I think a good groundwork has been established (by the committee)."
