All-Stars enjoy gridiron bonus

Tega Cay's Small Fry All-Stars gave it their all in a grueling playoff game against North Lancaster Monday, Nov. 17, but lost 42-0 at Bob Jones Stadium.

"Our All Stars played in a tough game against a great opponent. The scoreboard may have not been in our favor, but for all intents and purposes, the playoff game was a success," said Joey Blethen, Tega Cay's recreation coordinator.

It was the first playoff game for Tega Cay's Small Fry program.

"We are building something special here in our community. It's going to be a fun ride, and I'm just glad I am apart of it," Blethen said.

"It was definitely a learning experience," said Coach Ed Davis. "Our boys were small compared to the Lancaster team and this was our first year. We now know were we need to go as a new program."

The players, hungry for more action, then played in scrimmages against Clover and the Leroy Springs Recreation Complex.

"The team and the parents were not ready for the season to be over," Davis said.

Tega Cay lost both of those games.

"I will coach for 20 years to get our boys on the winning streak against some of the experienced teams," Coach Nick Thomas said.

The Tega Cay All Stars were also coached by Evan Helms and Dan Tate.

Also making history was the first Tega Cay cheerleading squad participating in a playoff game.

"We did not have tryouts, we just opened it up to any Tega Cay girls ages 6 to 10 years old," explained Hannah Davis, who helped with the young cheerleaders.

"The parents paid for the squad's wind suits and Melissa Gray, Katrina Tvedt and I helped the girls get ready to cheer at the playoff game."

LSRC teams in playoff, too

In the second playoff game, the Leroy Springs Small Fry All-Star Team won against Lancaster South by a score of 22-0.

William Lawhon set up the first Fort Mill score with an interception and long return early in the first quarter. Jordan Helms ran 15 yards for the first touchdown and the team built a halftime lead of 16-0.

The Fort Mill defense was led by Alston Osborne, Robert Valverde, Cade McDonald and Christopher Newell and the offense was led by quarterback Cole Martin, Jack Adkisson, Jordan Helms, Te'Quavious Gordon and the entire offensive line: Robert Valverde, Chandler Smith, Shane Fadeley, Austin Randolph and Davis Pinckney.

The Fort Mill team then faced a tough Rock Hill team on Thursday night, Nov. 20, in Chester. After Martin was injured in the first half, the LSRC team lost to Rock Hill.

Other members of the Fort Mill All-Star team are: Ben Brock, Wade Harris, William Lawhon, Cole Martin, Kyle McCrorie, Jake Norwood, Jacob Patterson, Davis Pinckney, Ben Pracht, Mario Robinson, Chandler Smith, Holden Vincelli and Dylan Wright.

The team was coached by Jeff Helms, David Bivins, Sean Smith, Jason Therrell and Eddie Osborne.
