Youth soccer shootout All Stars take it to the limit

The Tega Cay team was hoping to win the U13 All Stars Soccer Championship match in honor of their coach, Jon Jarrett, who is moving out of the area soon and coaching his final game for the local kids.

"Unfortunately, the results did not end in our favor," said Tega Cay's Recreation Coordinator, Joey Blethen.

Tega Cay's All Stars, who won the semifinal against the Leroy Springs Complex team 4-0, lost in the final to Clover 3-1 at Turner Field.

Clover took the lead in the first quarter on a goal by Manny Vargas. Tega Cay's Hank Tuipulotu tied it on a goal in the fourth quarter sending the match to overtime.

Geoff Liscoff and Tyler Jarrett owned the middle and stopped repeated attacks by Clover. Tuipulotu and Julia Applegate played a tough defense as Tega Cay ran a two-man defensive set.

After five minutes of overtime play, the score was still tied and the match went into a shootout with each team providing five players to take alternating shots at the goal. After each team kicked twice, the score was still tied.

With a third shot, Clover took the lead.

Both teams made their fourth attempts with Tega Cay's Olivia Dewey knocking in Tega Cay's only penalty kick during the shootout.

Clover won the championship game 3-1 and moved on to the State Tournament in Rock Hill. Tega Cay's U10 team, coached by Chris Quinn, also lost to a Clover team, 2-1, in the district championship game.
