Springfield boys' key to success: Having fun

The 2009 season for the Springfield Middle School boys soccer team was quietly productive. Twenty-six young men started practice in February with one goal in mind - have fun.

In the process of having fun, they managed to break nearly every record for the school's soccer program. The team started with a win in the rain-shortened Warrior Invitational Tournament against White Knoll Middle School and concluded the season with a "friendly" match against cross town rival Gold Hill Middle School. Along the way, the team managed to win a total of 12 games (a new record), win the conference championship for the second year in a row, set a team record with eight shutout victories, set a team record for fewest goals allowed (seven), surpass the 2008 record of 33 goals for a new record of 41 and have nine different players score throughout the season.

"This is a great group of players. They were hard working, fun, and cared about each other," Head Coach Michael Pratt said.

"They truly exemplified what it takes to make a team. Our number one goal was to have fun and I believe we did that and had the opportunity to learn how athletics and life go together." This season was Coach Pratt and Coach David Vawter's second working together as a coaching staff and the continuity seems to be paying off as the Mustangs have earned an incredible record of 21-1 in their first two seasons.

Among this year's wins were several matches against high school JV teams. The lone loss was 2-1 to Fort Mill Middle.

April 29 saw the Mustangs honor their eighth grade players. The team was given the opportunity to start and finish the "friendly" match against Gold Hill Middle as a tribute to their contributions to the program.

It looks like the Mustangs may already be on a roll for next year as 11 seventh graders waited eagerly for their time to play.

The Mustangs are made up of the following players: keepers Josh Bruckner and Josh Paulson; defensive players Mason Jackson, Julio Garcia, Chris Porter, Nick Yaggie, Mitchell Johnsen, Alex Duryee, Clay Pratt, Thompson Demas and Josh Wright. The offense consisted of Jonathan Cutrone, TK Abderahman, Trevor Jones, Tyler Snincak, Ross Lordo, Sean Helgason, Tyler Mumford, Brent Lowney, Nick Torre, Tyler Woodard, Austin Cassidy, Eliot Teal, Forest Sharp, Caleb Bonner and Alec Emenhemier.
