Windham gets collegiate honor
Fort Mill High School graduate Alex Windham has been named Spartanburg Methodist College's Zaxby's Athlete of the week for helping lead Spartanburg Methodist College to a repeat regional title and another run for a trip to nationals.Windham, a sophomore, was the offensive leader in the Lady Pioneers' repeat of title in the National Junior College Athletic Association's Region X 2009 regular season. The Lady Pioneers wrapped up their second consecutive region title with a double header sweep of Southeastern CC. Their 17-1 region record and 29-5 overall record are the best in 15 years at SMC.Windham is the leading hitter with a .525 batting average and lofty .759 slugging percentage. Her .525 batting average ranks her sixth nationally in JUCO statistics."Alex is going to be tough to replace next season," head coach Rick Pauly said."Because of her performance hitting from our number four position in the lineup, opposing teams have been forced to pitch to our other outstanding hitters in front of her. They set the table and then Alex drives them in as witnessed by her 33 RBIs this season."Pauly also said, "Alex is one of the rare combinations all coaches hope to recruit. Not only is she an outstanding softball player, she will also graduate this May as an Academic All-American."
