Fort Mill salon offers free cuts for residents in need

Are you unemployed and in need of haircut but your wallet says, “No can do?”

Close your depleted wallet, hop in the car and head over to Fort Mill’s Belle Vive Spa and Wellness Centre, where hair cuts are free every Wednesday and Friday.

“With this economy, people are on such a tight budget to be pampering themselves, Eriel Harker, spa and event coordinator, said. “Some people can’t afford to maintain their look because they have to pay their bills so we want to reach out to people who maybe can’t afford these services right now.”

Offering the free cuts affords the public a chance to still look and fell great despite the Great Recession that is marked by high unemployment. In addition to the free hair cuts, Belle Vive Spa and Wellness Centre is searching for models to help service providers in training perfect their skills, Harker said. From time to time, training will be offering in hair coloring, waxing, facials and massages.

This Saturday is the next training when models are needed, Harker said.

“They might need it for a job interview,” Harker said of cash-strapped residents in need of hair cuts. “We really want to reach out to the community – the homeless shelter (and) the battered women’s shelter – people who would benefit.”

Services will be discounted for colors and perms, Harker said.

Last Thursday, Penny Dimoff, a Fort Mill mother, took time out for some much celebrated “me time.”

“I have five children,” she said. “It’s definitely important to have the me time and have some beautification.”

Dimoff, whose children range in age from 23 to a set of 6-year-old twins, favors Belle Vive Spa and Wellness Centre’s outreach project.

“It’s awesome,” she said of the outreach effort. “It’s wonderful that they are offering to help out the public, especially with the way the economy is,” Dimoff said while she was in stylist Jeorjia Walker’s chair.

“Clients come in and just in conversations, hearing some of their life struggles – layoffs, pay cuts and cuts backs,” Walker said. “A lot of layoffs have taken place.”

That’s where free hair cuts and discounted services come into play, Walker said.

“It’s a great way to train some of our newbies and help some clients get ready for job interviews,” she said.
