Former Fort Mill High star Vance Walker was one of 13 players recently released from the Atlanta Falcons as they make their final cuts in preparation for the 2009 NFL season.
Walker, a defensive tackle and 2005 graduate of Fort Mill High, was drafted by the Falcons in the seventh round of the NFL Draft in April. The 22-year-old rookie out of Georgia Tech played in all four of Atlanta’s preseason games getting three tackles and one pass deflection. Walker excelled at Georgia Tech, where he majored in management.
He played in nearly 50 games, totaling 110 tackles and 13 sacks in his time on the field. He was a third-team All-American in 2007 and a two-time first-team All-ACC player.
It's unclear what's next for Walker. A late round pick, he could still be added tot he Falcons' practice sqaud or get signed by another team. A player has to clear waivers -- a 24-hour period this year -- before being picked up by another team. NFL teams are expected to begin free agent signings Sunday night.
