Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile and his department have received national accreditation. The award was presented to the sheriff and the sheriff’s office by South Carolina Supreme Court Justice John W. Kittredge, who is also commissioner on Accreditation for Law Enforcement.
In 2011, the sheriff’s office received its state accreditation and now national accreditation. That’s great! This takes a lot of work and dedication. The accreditation process involved an intense peer review of our agency by a team of public safety officials from around the country, as well as an open public forum for comments and input. Accreditation Manager Eric Brown and Accreditation Specialist Jessica Walker from the sheriff’s office did an outstanding job managing the process by making sure they were complying with the standards and developing documentation needed for the on-site assessment.
The purpose of the CALEA accreditation program is to improve the delivery of public safety services by maintaining a body of standards which are evaluated through an established and demonstrative review process. Becoming an accredited agency reflects professionalism and a commitment to accountability.
The CALEA standards give the sheriff a proven management system of written directives, sound training guidelines, clearly defined lines of authority, and a sound basis for decision making and resource allocation. The agency is obligated to comply with applicable standards and is bound to follow the spirit and intent of its accreditation.

I have known Faile since long before he became sheriff, and as I looked around the room at the historic courthouse where the reception was held, I could not help but feel proud of how far he has taken the sheriff’s office. We are very lucky in Lancaster County to have Faile and his entire department.
