Trick shot artist Dennis Walters coming to Indian Land

Trick golfer Dennis Walters will bring his show to Carolina Lakes Golf Course driving range at Sun City next week.

“The Dennis Walters Golf Show” will begin at 1 p.m. and is open to the public.

Injured in a golf cart accident in 1974 that left him paralyzed from the waist down, Walters learned to golf again with the help of a swivel seat mounted on the passenger side of his golf cart.

“I always loved to play golf, and I didn’t want to live my life without golf in it,” he said.

His hour-long show consists of interacting with the audience as well as hitting trick shots and providing a motivational message along the way. Even his dog gets into the act. Walters is one of 11 honorary lifetime members of the PGA and in 2008 was presented with the highest honor in golf – the Distinguished Service Award.

During the years, Walters has worked with golfing legends like Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Tiger Woods. He has been performing since 1977. He has made more than 3,000 appearances and performed in all 50 states.

“I didn’t dream I could make a career out of it,” he said. “But it was a good mentally and physically for me.”

Walters’ sister, Barbara Herman, lives in Sun City and was able to arrange for his performance free of charge to the public.

“It’s a wonderful thing to see, even if you have never played golf before,” she said. “He has been an outstanding golfer since he was 5 years old.”

Walters said the traveling is hard, but he still enjoys doing the show with the help of his dog, Bucky. Bucky, is the fourth dog Walters has trained to perform in his show. Bucky even takes questions from the audience.

“He is good at math, general information and golf trivia,” Walters boasts.

Walters performs in front of an estimated 35,000 people annually. His off-season is usually November through April unless shows call him to warmer climates like Arizona or California during the winter months.
