Local lacrosse players play in Brine Classic

Two local high school lacrosse players have been named All-Americans.

Nation Ford’s Marlo Vandiver and Fort Mill’s Calvin Kelly were selected as a Brine National High School All-Americans and selected to participate in the Brine National Lacrosse Classic in Maryland during the week of July 4.

Vandiver, a rising junior, said she got a lot out of the trip.

“It was fun,” she said. “It was great experience playing against some tough completion.”

Vandiver played for Team Georgia in the tournament, but failed to advance to the final round of eight for the championship.

Vandiver plays for the Queen City Stars Elite Black travel lacrosse team of Charlotte. She is playing in the New England Cup this summer in Amherst, Ma., and the Capital Cup and Champions Cup in Midlothian, Va., as well as in collegiate recruiting tournaments.

Vandiver has been playing lacrosse for the past six years and plays defense and midfield. She said the sport challenges her differently than others.

“I love lacrosse,” she said. “I played other sports like basketball, but it takes so much to play lacrosse. I like how challenging it is.”

Kelly, a rising sophomore at Fort Mill High, also played in the Brine tournament. He is at a training camp in Ontario, Canada. He could not be reached for comment.
