Letter: Hospital standoff needs to end

Hospital standoff needs to end

I just got off the phone with Beth Web at Gov. Haley’s office about an email I had sent the governor last week, asking about the hospital issue here in Fort Mill.

I never said which hospital I want to be built, I never gave my opinion one way or the other. Let’s face it, they don’t care which one gets built.

I think at this point, we all know which hospital we want; everyone has their own opinion. All the hospitals that submitted for approval to be allowed to build certainly meet the minimum qualifications, but here we are years later with this garbage stuck in litigation.

How much money is being wasted? How much money in tax revenue is being lost? How many jobs could have been filled by now?

My question to the governor was simple: Since all the hospitals involved meet the state’s minimum requirements, at this point in the game, why can’t we as the ones who would be most using the services be allowed to vote on which one we want built?

Which one we would most likely want to use in an emergency? Why should this be relegated to a legal system more than 75 miles away?

Beth Web let me know that the governor said she can’t do anything at this time, but that possibly our local council could.

According to Ms. Web, this was a suggestion that has not been made before, so I have copied the members of the York County Council and the Fort Mill Town Council on this email to the Fort Mill Times to ask if they will help the voters get this on the ballot.

If we want this hospital situation resolved, we the people are apparently going to have to take matters into our own hands, and I want to know what our elected officials locally are willing to do to resolve the situation.

As citizens of York County and Fort Mill, we should have a say. There is an election in November. Put the hospital on the ballot. Let us vote.

This doesn’t need to continue in court and further waste everyone’s time and taxes. I know I for one am sick of it.

I would like to encourage everyone in the area to reach out and request that this be put on the ballot. Let’s make a change to the system and let our voices be heard.
