Classy move by NaFo
Some days it is hard for me to keep my faith that humanity has any good qualities, but last night at the Fort Mill/Nation Ford High School Basketball game, my faith was restored.
Fort Mill has a young man with Asperger’s syndrome. He is very tall and is on the team as a legitimate player. But he is on the bench. The game was very close until the end. The student section began yelling to put this player in. So did the opposing section (these are rival teams in the biggest way). The coach did so. And then the most amazing thing happened.
The opposing team threw the ball to this young man with only seconds left. He missed a shot. The other team took the ball out and threw it into one of their players who then handed the ball to this player and wrapped his arms around him (put in tears flowing now!) to cause a foul to be called. The entire packed gym went up in cheers. The player went down to shoot his foul shots. Missed the first one. It then became so quiet you could have heard a pen drop....he made the second one....THE ENTIRE GYM...BOTH SIDES WERE ECSTATIC! BOTH TEAMS WERE HIGH FIVING THIS YOUNG MAN, GIVING HIM HUGS, ETC. The rival student section began chanting his name and our students joined in. The game was over and the cheers and congratulations continued for this amazing basketball player. Yep...for a moment in time....you could see what living in peace and love looks like....and for a moment in time I could see that humanity has a chance if they would act like this every day!
