Student’s project collects ton of food for Fort Mill Care Center
Lauren Seco, a local Girl Scout and student at Banks Trail Middle School, started a food drive for the Fort Mill Care Center that collected a ton of food in three weeks.
This project was for Seco’s Girl Scout Silver Award, a community service project that continues to influence a community forever. After interviewing the Fort Mill Care Center’s president, Diana Bernard, Seco learned that the Care Center has an on-going problem.
“People don’t realize that during the non-holiday season, the Fort Mill Care Center doesn’t receive a lot of donations,” she said. “People mostly donate during Thanksgiving and Christmas, but people still need food the rest of the year.”
With the help of teacher and Junior Beta Club leader Bethany Dickey, Seco and her fellow Junior Beta Club members launched the project to aid the people of Fort Mill and Tega Cay who are in need.
The Care Center distributes more than 8,000 pounds of food a month, on average. To donate, or for more information, go to fortmillcarecenter.org. The address is 2760 Old Nation Road, Fort Mill and the hours are 9 a.m.-noon Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The phone number is 803-547-7620. Email the Center at staff@fortmillcarecenter.org.
