The Fort Mill High boys’ tennis team has jumped to a 2-1 start on the season.
The Jackets beat Rock Hill 4-2 to go over .500 for the season. Although only one starter is back from last year, the team has four players who know what they are doing, said coach Willie Ware.
“We are young, but most have some playing experience,” Ware said.
Fort Mill’s returning starter, No.1 singles player Jay Karwatsky, led the Jackets in the win against the Bearcats, getting a 7-6, 6-4 win in straight sets.

After falling at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, Fort Mill bounced back at No. 4 singles with a win from Jack Cauthen 6-1, 6-1 and at No. 5 singles with Math Brautigam getting a win in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 10-6.
In the lone doubles match, the Jackets’ Matt Hicks and Sahil Masih won 6-2, 6-2.
With the exception of two matches with Marvin Ridge to make up for rain-outs, the rest of Fort Mill’s schedule is all Region III-AAAA matches. Ware said the region will be tough again this season, but expects his team to be in the thick of it.
“We should be real competitive in the region,” he said.
The Jackets will take on Northwestern and South Pointe this week.
