Nation Ford High will have a new head swim coach next season.
Meredith Yocum is expecting her first child in July with husband Garrett. She has been head swim coach for the Falcons for the past five seasons. Assistant coach Kristin Martin will take the reins.
“Having a newborn and being a coach, I can’t do both,” Yocum said. “I’m stepping down, but I’m not walking away. I will still be involved with the team. They are being left in wonderful hands. It will be an easy transition. I am excited for them. I think they will have a great year.”
Martin has been a coach with the Rock Hill Rays at the Rock Hill Aquatics Center for the past six seasons, and has been coaching in the sport for nine years.

“My love of swimming is teaching the children proper fundamentals,” she said. “I like how it’s competitive as a team sport, but also as an individual. It gives individuals goals and builds confidence.”
Martin will have three children on next year’s team with her son, Jacob, leading the way as a senior. Her son, Daniel will be a sophomore and James will be a seventh-grader.
“I got into coaching because of their love of swimming,” Martin said.
Martin said she feels good about the Nation Ford squad for next year.
Yocum, who also is head coach of the Springfield Green Wave of the Greater Charlotte Swim League, has already committed to coach the team in the short summer season, saying she will try to make it through the season if possible.
It will be her last summer with the Green Wave team, she said.
