The Nation Ford Lady Falcons girls’ soccer team won in dramatic fashion last week, beating Rock Hill in penalty kick overtime sessions.
Led by junior Emma Maddox, who scored both goals in regulation and one on penalty kicks, the Lady Falcons picked up a key Region III win to keep them in the playoff hunt.
“We have worked very hard this season, and … (we’re) hoping to find a way into the playoffs,” head coach Caitlyn Bagwell said. “Anything can happen in this region. We are in the playoff hunt, and hopefully we will find ourselves with … a home game as our first playoff game.”
Nation Ford struggled in first half to get any good looks at the goal. Eventually, though, the Lady Falcons found the opening it had been searching for; right before the end of the first half, junior Emma Maddox scored to give Nation Ford a 1-0 lead.

Rock Hill came back in the second half to tie the game. But the Lady Falcons still bested them offensively, staying in control of the ball and keeping it on the Rock Hill side to take multiple shots.
After Rock Hill tied the game, the Lady Falcons bounced back as Maddox scored again with about 21 minutes left in the game. That goal wasn’t enough to clinch the deal, though, and Rock Hill got another goal off a breakaway with about seven minutes left to tie it again at 2-2. Both of Rock Hill’s goals came on breakaways that put them one-on-one against Nation Ford keeper Mary Patterson.
After two five-minute overtime periods, the game was decided on the best of seven penalty kicks. Nation Ford sophomore Courtney Cameron scored the first one for the Lady Falcons. After a Rock Hill miss and a miss by Nation Ford, Rock Hill converted its second penalty kick to tie things up.
Lady Falcons junior Rachael Smith then scored Nation Ford’s second penalty kick, but Rock Hill also scored its second to keep things even. Maddox and junior Brooke Ward then converted the next two for Nation Ford and Rock Hill missed its third attempt, giving the Lady Falcons the win.
Up next for Nation Ford after spring break are home games with Clover and Fort Mill scheduled for April 22 and April 25, respectively.
