Runners needed for Midnight Mile Fort Mill sports fundraiser

Runners will gather Saturday as part of the third annual Midnight Mile to raise money for the Fort Mill High cross country and swim team programs.

Organized by former Fort Mill High swimmer and runner Jeffrey Case, the event will be held from 10 p.m. until midnight at Bob Jones Stadium on the campus of Fort Mill High School.

Runners can register at the event and the fee is $5. There will be T-shirts for sale for $10. There will be four sections of the mile this year and unlike past years, the first heat will begin at 11 p.m. and finish with the fastest heat at midnight.

“I'm trying to get a larger crowd and I'm hoping that starting the races earlier might get a few more parents and kids out for the race,” said Case, who is an environmental engineer student at Clemson University.

This year’s event proceeds will be split between the school’s cross country and swim teams. The money for the swim team will go to help erect a road sign somewhere in town to recognize Fort Mill High’s four state championships.

The money for the cross country team will go for food and T-shirts.

“I've spent three years on the cross country team and six years on the swim team and really wanted a chance to give back to the other sport (swimming) that helped me become the person I am today,” Case said.

The event is for all ages and if enough kids show up there could be a race for those 12 and younger.

Case is trying to get bands and other entertainment at the event and is shooting for 100 runners this year. The past two years about 90 runners competed in the event.
