Key wins put Fort Mill in driver’s seat for Region tennis title

Key Region III wins against Clover and Nation Ford kept the Fort Mill Lady Jackets undefeated on the year, and puts them closer to winning the region title.

Fort Mill edged Clover 4-3 and beat Nation Ford 4-2 to improve to 14-0 with three matches left in the regular season.

The Lady Jackets had an easier time against the Lady Falcons, winning without having to play an extra doubles match.

In singles competition against Nation Ford, Fort Mill was led by No. 1 Suzette Smit’s 6-3, 6-0 win against Suzanna Goss.

At No. 2 and No. 3 singles, Fort Mill got both wins but had to go three sets. Rachel Brooks beat Jordan Sawyer 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 at No. 2 and Reagan Paff beat Susie Clark 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 at No. 3.

Fort Mill fell at No. 4 singles as Nation Ford’s Darby Trull beat Kaja Klages 7-5, 7-5, and at No. 5 singles where Megan Gallagher beat Ellie Prain 7-5, 6-0.

The Lady Jackets clinched the win with a No. 2 doubles victory as Shreya Katti and Preya Desai defeated Annie Morgenstern and Haley Fulton 7-5, 6-3.

Things were tougher for Fort Mill against Clover, as the match was decided by No. 1 doubles as Smit and Brooks won 7-6, 5-7, 1-0. Katti and Desai also won at No. 2 doubles with a 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 victory.

Smit won her No. 1 singles match 6-3, 6-0 and Prain won her No. 5 singles match at 6-4, 6-1.

Fort Mill has two more region matches against Rock Hill and York this week as the look to sew up the region championship.

Nation Ford has matches against York and Northwestern to finish its region schedule as well.
