A Chester County woman told deputies that the father of her 1-month-old daughter threatened her at knife-point and refused to allow her to leave their apartment on Thursday, a day after she decided to leave because of issues in their relationship, authorities say.
Deputies were sent to a Shirley Road apartment in Fort Lawn after neighbors called about a disturbance between a couple, according to a Chester County Sheriff’s report. Deputies learned that Rodney Barber, 28, had a knife and would not let a woman out of the apartment. Authorities heard “heavy movement” coming from inside the apartment. Once officers knocked on the door and announced themselves as police, the door swung open and a woman, 22, ran out crying, yelling, “He tried to kill me.”
Barber stepped outside and walked towards police with his hands up, saying, “I haven’t done nothing.” The woman told police that she and Barber live together and just celebrated the birth of their daughter last month, the report states. They have been going through hard times, she told deputies, so she decided to leave on Wednesday. Barber called her, telling her to pick up her belongings. When she arrived at the apartment, Barber shut the door and would not allow her to leave. When she tried opening the door, Barber shoved her, grabbing a knife and shouting, “No,” the report states.
The woman begged Barber to put the knife down and pleaded with him not to hurt her, the report states. Barber told her he wanted his daughter and began choking the woman. The woman told deputies she tried calling for help on her cell phone, but she couldn’t get any signal. She tried to escape again, but Barber blocked her exit, allegedly saying he had been thinking about killing her, “but he won’t if he gets his daughter,” the report states. The woman managed to grab Barber’s cell phone and call a friend, who then called police.

Barber continued to tell deputies that he didn’t do anything before he called the victim crazy. He was taken to the Chester County Detention Center and charged with kidnapping and criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature. He is also held, without bond, on a family court bench warrant.
