Fort Lawn man gets 5 months prison for stealing dead roommate’s Social Security benefits

A Fort Lawn Man was sentenced to five months prison for stealing his dead roommate’s Social Security benefits.

Gerald W. Costner, 71, received the sentence in federal court in Columbia for theft of government funds, according to a release issued Tuesday from US District Attorney Bill Nettles.

Costner was also ordered him to pay restitution of $92,925.

Evidence presented in court established that Costner obtained Social Security Administration benefits by collecting his roommate’s benefits from June 1992 until January 2014, after his roommate died. Costner failed to notify the SSA of the death and collected $92,925 in fraudulent benefits.
