The York County Sheriff is warning people of a scam where someone poses as a deputy or an employee over the phone seeking money.
Sheriff Bruce Bryant said his office has received several complaints about calls that appear to originate from the main number for the office, 803-628-3059.
A man with an accent states that the person has several charges and a fine that needs to be paid immediately. The office investigated a similar scam in November where a suspect claimed to be a lieutenant with the Fort Mill police.
Bryant said no one from law enforcement would solicit money over the phone for any reason.

He urged anyone receiving such calls to simply hang up, then call his office to report the incident. People cannot rely on caller ID since scammers can use technology to make it look like their calls are coming from a local law enforcement agency or legitimate business.
