Officials in South Carolina are investigating after finding an unidentified body inside a burning vehicle in rural Chester County over the weekend.

The identity and gender of the person remained unknown Monday, said Terry Tinker, the Chester County coroner. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday in Newberry, Tinker said.

Officials have not said if they believe the person died in the fire or was dead before the fire started.

Deputies discovered the body Saturday after arriving at the fire off Turnbuckle Road near S.C. 9 west of Chester, the Chester County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook posting Sunday night.

The State Law Enforcement Division is leading the investigation after a request from Chester County Sheriff Max Dorsey.

The SLED investigation remained ongoing Monday, said spokesperson Renee Wunderlich.
