A man who escaped from a North Carolina prison Sunday has been caught in South Carolina, officials said.

Police from the State Law Enforcement Division and the York County Sheriff’s Office captured Roy Burgess, 42, the N.C. Department of Adult Correction said Monday afternoon. Patrol deputies assisted SLED in taking Burgess into custody, said Trent Faris, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office.

Details about the capture were not released.

Burgess somehow was able to leave the minimum-security Lincoln Correctional Center in Lincolnton, N.C. Officials with the prison system and N.C. State Bureau of Investigation have not said how he was able to leave the prison or travel about 30 miles to South Carolina. He had been serving a sentence of up to two years for larceny, according to prison officials.

Burgess will remain jailed in South Carolina until he can be extradited to North Carolina. It is unclear what charges he will face from the escape.
