Investigators seeking leads, witnesses in Lake Wylie shooting death
Investigators on Friday were still seeking leads in the death of a Charlotte business owner who was found shot to death in his Lake Wylie home Wednesday.
Jesse Campbell, 64, who neighbors and co-workers say operated Campbell’s Greenhouse and Nursery at 209 McDonald Ave. in Charlotte’s Dilworth neighborhood, was found by deputies in his Lake Wylie house around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. A concerned co-worker went to Campbell’s home when he didn’t show up for work and found him lying on the floor.
Deputies had to use an ax to break into the house, according to a York County Sheriff’s Office report.
Law enforcement has not had previous calls for service to the house, and investigators say Campbell is not known to have any enemies either at his home on the 9600 block of Pine Moss Lane or his business.
Sheriff Bruce Bryant said the homicide is not considered a random act of violence, but declined further comment as the investigation continues. Detectives continued working the case Friday but so far have few leads and no witnesses.
Police are hoping neighbors noticed “anything unusual” Tuesday or Wednesday that might help the investigation.
The York County Multijurisdictional Forensic Services Unit and the S.C. Highway Patrol are assisting in the investigation.
